EUROPEAN PRESS PUBLISHERS CALL UPON MEMBER STATES TO ADOPT MANDATE FOR COPYRIGHT REFORM TO PROCEED

Europe’s press publishers, represented by EMMA (European Magazine Media Association), ENPA (European Newspaper Publishers’ Association), EPC (European Publishers Council) and NME (News Media Europe) call upon Member States in a letter to move forward with the reform and adopt the mandate in order for the final negotiations to take place next week.

With time fast running out for the directive to get through the final legislative stages before the current European Parliament ends its mandate, the adoption of a new mandate by Coreper is the necessary condition for final negotiations between co-legislators or Trilogue to occur.

Ultimately, the European Parliament’s approach on Article 11 (the press publisher´s right) proposes a balanced and enforceable solution to protect press publishers against the free-riding on press content by online services in the digital environment.

We therefore ask Member States to support the mandate on Friday and to give the Romanian presidency the flexibility towards the Parliament’s approach.

A spokesman for the press publishers said: “Member States must move on with this reform in order to grant the press the chance to adopt a much-needed Publisher’s Right, which is key to the future of professional journalism and a sustainable, independent, democracy-enhancing press.”
