EMMA highlights the importance of defending press freedom on World Press Freedom Day

On World Press Freedom Day, EMMA, representing over 50,000 magazine publishers across Europe, would like to underline the fundamental importance of press freedom for any democracy.

In this regard, it is essential that the long-term prosperity of a pluralistic, diverse and vibrant magazine media is safeguarded. Any measures hindering freedom of expression pose a threat to press freedom. Legal certainty is essential when publishing content.

EMMA defends press freedom vis-à-vis EU policy and decision-makers. At EU-level, there are currently a variety of issues under discussion which could potentially have an impact on press freedom, including data protection; applicable law and jurisdiction; and net neutrality (see the section on ‘EU Issues’ for further details).

EMMA will continue its constructive dialogue at EU level on these and other issues, including defense of freedom of commercial communication, which is an integral part of the overall principle of freedom of expression and the life-blood of the majority of periodical publications.
