EMMA concerned by upcoming Council decision on energy labelling in advertising

On Thursday 26 November the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council is expected to adopt its general approach on the Commission Proposal for a Regulation on Energy Labelling.

The latest draft compromise from the Council requests that any advertisement for energy related products discloses the energy efficiency class of the product advertised (as suggested in the Commission proposal), but also the range of the energy efficiency classes available and the energy consumption of the product.

Advertising plays a crucial role in financing press content. Every additional advertising restriction, be it a mandatory label, message or a ban, threatens the financing of a free, qualitative and professional press content. We therefore urge all relevant Ministers making a decision on Thursday to consider that advertising should remain free from additional information requirements.
