European press publishers call for support of core European values in Gershkovich case

The arrest of Evan Gershkovich, journalist of the Wall Street Journal, in the Russian federation with accusations of espionage is a clear and unambiguous attack against the fundamental values of European democracies, freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

This can only be understood as the criminalization of the work of any journalist of any nationality to do their job in the Russian federation without fear of repercussions. EMMA & ENPA strongly condemn this act against a freedom recognized to every citizen in any constitution of a democratic country.

We call on the Russian authorities to proceed to the liberation of Evan Gershovich without preconditions. We welcome initiatives by European press publishers and journalists working in Europe to mobilise to defend freedom of expression and freedom of the press together. We call on leaders of the European Union to show the utmost firmness towards a regime that does not hesitate to resort to such acts against freedom of expression and freedom of the press together.
